How to Find Your Nap Am (Sound Element) by Birth Year

Nap am (ngũ hành nạp âm) is the "hidden" five-element assigned to your birth year in Eastern astrology. It differs from the ordinary element of your Heavenly Stem — it comes from the 60-year sexagenary cycle (Luc Thap Hoa Giap) and is the element most people mean by "bản mệnh" (destiny element).

How the cycle works

The sexagenary cycle pairs 10 Heavenly Stems (Can) with 12 Earthly Branches (Chi) to make 60 unique year names that repeat every 60 years. Each pair carries a poetic nap am element — for example, Giap Ty and At Suu together are Hai Trung Kim ("gold in the sea").

A key rule: the nap am element stays the same for two consecutive years, then changes.

How to find yours

  1. Convert your birth year to its Can Chi name (e.g., 1990 = Canh Ngo).
  2. Look up the nap am element for that Can Chi pair.
  3. That element (Metal, Wood, Water, Fire or Earth) is your bản mệnh.

Examples: 1990 Canh Ngo = Lo Bang Tho (Earth); 1995 At Hoi = Son Dau Hoa (Fire); 2000 Canh Thin = Bach Lap Kim (Metal).

Why it matters

Nap am is used in choosing auspicious dates, checking couple compatibility (does his element support or clash with hers?), and understanding your core temperament.
