What is Tam Tai? How to find your bad-luck years and ease them

Tam Tai ("three calamities") is a folk belief about a run of three consecutive years thought to bring setbacks within the 12-year cycle. Each zodiac trine group meets its Tam Tai in three fixed years.

How to find your Tam Tai years

The four trine groups and their Tam Tai years:

• Monkey – Rat – Dragon: Tam Tai in the Tiger, Cat, Dragon years.
• Tiger – Horse – Dog: in the Monkey, Rooster, Dog years.
• Snake – Rooster – Ox: in the Pig, Rat, Ox years.
• Pig – Cat – Goat: in the Snake, Horse, Goat years.

What to avoid

Folk advice is to be careful with big undertakings during the three years:

• Limit building, ground-breaking, weddings, business openings and large investments — especially the middle year (the heaviest).
• Watch paperwork, lawsuits and long journeys.
• Mind your health and avoid conflict.

How to ease it

• If a big task is unavoidable, people often borrow the age of an unaffected person to front it, or choose another year.
• Do good deeds, keep calm, and hold a start-of-year offering.
