What Is Đại Vận in Tử Vi? Reading Your 10-Year Luck Cycle
In Tử Vi Đẩu Số (Zi Wei Dou Shu), your birth chart is a fixed snapshot of the sky, but life itself keeps moving. Đại Vận — often translated as the "Grand Cycle" or 10-year luck cycle — is the tool that shows how your chart activates decade by decade. Understanding it turns a static chart into a living map of timing.
What Đại Vận Means
Every Tử Vi chart has twelve cung (palaces) arranged around the wheel, from cung Mệnh (the Self/Life palace) through wealth, career, marriage, and so on. Your birth chart describes your innate potential. Đại Vận describes when that potential rises to the surface.
Each Đại Vận lasts ten years, and life moves through the palaces one at a time. So for one decade the "active" palace might be your Career palace; for the next it shifts to Marriage, then Health, and so on. During each period, the stars sitting in that palace — plus their interactions — color the theme of those ten years.
Think of it this way:
- The natal chart = the seeds you were born with.
- The Đại Vận = which garden bed is being watered right now.
How the 10-Year Cycles Begin and Flow
The starting age of your first Đại Vận is calculated from your Cục (the elemental "Bureau": Water 2, Wood 3, Metal 4, Earth 5, Fire 6). The Cục number is the age at which your first cycle begins — for example, a Wood 3 Bureau starts around age 3, a Fire 6 Bureau around age 6.
From there, cycles run in ten-year blocks:
- If your Bureau is 3, your cycles might run roughly ages 3–12, 13–22, 23–32, and so on.
- The direction of movement (clockwise or counter-clockwise through the palaces) depends on your gender and the year's Yin/Yang polarity.
Because of this, two people born the same day can experience their palaces in a different order, which is one reason Tử Vi feels so personal.
How to Read a Đại Vận Step by Step
When you want to understand a specific decade, work through these layers:
- Find the active palace. Identify which palace your current Đại Vận falls in. Its natal meaning (Career, Wealth, Relationships…) sets the headline theme.
- Read the main stars there. Are strong stars like Tử Vi, Thiên Phủ, Vũ Khúc, Thái Dương present? Empowering stars suggest momentum; softer or challenged stars suggest a period for building and patience.
- Check the Tứ Hóa (Four Transformations). Each decade re-activates the transformations — Hóa Lộc (prosperity), Hóa Quyền (authority), Hóa Khoa (recognition), and Hóa Kỵ (friction/lessons). Where these land shows where energy flows and where care is needed.
- Look at the connected palaces. The active palace "talks" to its opposite and triangular partners. A cycle in Career, for instance, is influenced by Wealth and the Migration palace too.
- Note the supporting stars. Helpful stars (Tả Phụ, Hữu Bật, Văn Xương, Văn Khúc) bring allies and opportunity; challenging stars (Kình Dương, Đà La, Hỏa Tinh, Linh Tinh) point to areas that reward extra effort and awareness.
Đại Vận vs Tiểu Vận (Yearly Luck)
Inside each 10-year block sits Tiểu Vận — the annual cycle. If Đại Vận is the season, Tiểu Vận is the individual month within it. A supportive decade can still contain a demanding year, and a quieter decade can hold a standout year. Reading both together gives you resolution: the Đại Vận sets the tone, the Tiểu Vận sets the timing.
Making It Practical
A few grounded ways to use your Đại Vận:
- Align big moves with supportive cycles. When your Career or Wealth palace is well-starred and active, it's a natural window to expand.
- Treat challenging cycles as training. A Hóa Kỵ decade isn't "bad luck" — it's a spotlight on where growth, patience, and discipline pay off later.
- Read the whole life arc. Lay out all your cycles in sequence and you'll see the rhythm of your life: seasons of building, harvesting, and resting.
Remember, no cycle is purely fortunate or unfortunate. Tử Vi describes tendencies and timing, while your choices, effort, and character remain the deciding factors.
