The Nine Luminaries: the 9 ruling stars and how to offset them

In folk belief, each year a person is ruled by one of nine stars (the Nine Luminaries), rotating by lunar age and gender. Some are auspicious, some not — knowing yours lets you "welcome" or "offset" it.

The nine stars

  • Thái Dương (good): career, wealth, helpful people — great for men.
  • Thái Âm (good): happy events, wealth — great for women.
  • Mộc Đức (good): peace, good fortune in marriage.
  • La Hầu (bad): disputes, gossip, blood ailments — men take care.
  • Kế Đô (bad): hidden troubles, sorrow, relationship setbacks — women take care.
  • Thái Bạch (bad): financial loss — "empties the house"; men guard money.
  • Thổ Tú (bad): obstacles, lawsuits, small losses.
  • Vân Hớn (bad): disputes, ailments, temper; beware fire.
  • Thủy Diệu (neutral): wealth but beware water and drink.

The offering (dâng sao giải hạn)

For a bad star, folk tradition holds an offering on a fixed lunar day each month, facing the star's direction with a set number of lamps, plus good deeds and a calm mind. For good stars, people usually just welcome them for extra luck.

Note

This is folk belief; tables and rites vary by region. What matters more is living well, being careful at the right times, and a calm heart. See the prayers and perpetual calendar for dates.

For reference and reassurance — not a fixed fate.
