Eight Mansions: how to find house directions that suit your age

Eight Mansions (Bát Trạch) is one of the most popular feng shui methods for finding house directions that suit your age. Its strength is that it is clear and deterministic, based on your Kua number.

Your Kua number

From your lunar birth year and gender, you get a Kua number (1–9) mapping to a trigram: Kan, Li, Zhen, Xun (East group) or Qian, Kun, Gen, Dui (West group). Note: a man and a woman born the same year usually have different Kua numbers.

East and West groups

• East group favors North, South, East, Southeast.
• West group favors West, Northwest, Southwest, Northeast.

4 good and 4 bad directions

Each Kua has four auspicious directions — Sheng Qi (wealth; best, for the main door and desk), Tian Yi (health; bed), Yan Nian (relationships; master bedroom), Fu Wei (stability; study/altar) — and four inauspicious ones (Jue Ming, Wu Gui, Liu Sha, Huo Hai), best used for the stove, toilet and storage.
